Thanks for getting social
Thank you to everyone who braved the wind to join us at our first summer social, co-hosted with Vancouver Startup Week.
We had more than 60 people join us June 19 at Spaces Gastown to talk tech, law and access to justice. Among them was CBABC president Margaret Mereigh, and we loved what she had to say about how the bar association is pursuing innovation.
Jack Newton, the co-founder and CEO of Clio, pitched us a trillion-dollar idea, one that lies between the market demand for legal services, and the amount being supplied.
“When we talk about access to justice, I do think it is as simple as thinking about a product-market fit problem,” he said, adding that in the U.S. alone, more than $350 billion is spent on legal services annually.
“This data is telling us that only represents 23% of the opportunity that’s out there. There’s essentially a trillion-dollar opportunity sitting out there for lawyers to figure out, if they can figure out: how do we better build product-market fit.”
Wow. And by the way, that’s trillion with 12 zeroes.
Things are happening
It’s that kind of thinking that has us so excited to share that Clio has joined The Justice Hack as our presenting sponsor this year.
And on the topic of product-market thinking: we also announced last week that our theme for this year’s hackathon will be “everyday legal challenges for startups and SMEs”.
Clio contributed to our first event last September, and we are thankful for their support this year. The Law Foundation of BC also supported us in 2018, and we are grateful they will once again be providing financial support to The Justice Hack.
2019 Hackathon: Sept. 21-22
Mark your calendars: this year’s event will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 21 & 22.
We will once again be looking for participants, mentors and speakers with various backgrounds in business, technology, law and justice.
Official invitations and details to follow.
In the meantime, follow @TheJusticeHack on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and help us spread the word by sharing this post.
